Welcome to the Student Science Fair Page. Here you can find the documents that your teacher has handed out in class, as well as some additional information to help you complete your project. BFIS Annual Science FairRationaleThe central goal of science is to obtain a better understanding of the world in which we live. This understanding is dynamic: it has changed, and continues to be changed, as new discoveries are made and old ideas are modified in the face of new evidence. Thus, science as a field of study involves not only a body of knowledge, but also a means of inquiry that continues to shape our understanding of the universe. It is this second theme that is the focus of the BFIS Science Fair. Science as a means of inquiry relies heavily on observation and experimentation. The so-called “scientific method” that is central to inquiry is not so much a rigid list of steps to follow, but rather a set of principles around which new discoveries can be made. The skill of designing, performing and communicating experiments is surely one of the most important in any science course. Therefore, all students* in middle school and high school science courses are required to complete a science fair project. Doing so provides an opportunity for students to become part of the process of science, learning valuable skills and making genuine discoveries along the way. * Due to the quantity of coursework involved, AP science students are not required to complete a science fair project. Grading and JudgingAs the skills associated with designing, performing and communicating an experiment are central to the study of science, students will be graded on their performance throughout the process. Specific information about these assessments is provided in this information package. In addition, the Science Fair is a competition. The final projects are judged and prizes are awarded in both the Middle School and High School in the categories of biology, chemistry and physics. Overview of Important Dates
