Mathematics Department Philosophy Statement
Written by Ana MarÌa Dianderas

The basic orientation of the mathematics department is to develop an approach toward math in which students, both individually and cooperatively, explore the concepts of math under the teacher's guidance. It aims to stimulate interest so that each student will discover for him/herself patterns and relationships between ideas and operations. In this way, the student will establish patterns of thought which are appropriate to logical reasoning and problem solving, whether it be in math or any other facet of life.

It is not intended to sacrifice mastery of the basic skills. It is expected that all students will master basic facts and operations and their practical applications. The impact of computational tools, the calculator and the computer, must also be considered so that both math and technology can be employed as viable tools in the students' daily environment, now and in the future.

It is clearly understood that each child is an individual, and that individuals learn concepts at different rates and in different ways. It is the aim of the math program to provide all students with a common core of math and computer knowledge, with individual differences addressed by differing instructional approaches and speeds.

It is the intent of the department to provide students with the tools for independent thinking and active learning in a non-threatening, motivating atmosphere so as to guarantee successful math experience and competency which are necessary for further secondary and post secondary pursuits.
