Paying Tribute to the Bonds of Friendship

Homenaje a la amistad

I want to use my first letter this new year to talk about the 10th grade class. 

On September 17th, the night of Open House, they held a memorial honoring the life of Margo Jennings. In the two preceding weeks they met with their counselor Monna McDiarmid, and opened themselves up to grieving, mourning, remembering and laughing. During that time they also organized the memorial. It was a night, for those present, which will be a defining moment in our collective experience at BFIS. It was simple and poignant. For over two hours they played videos they had made along with those produced by Margo´s parents. They came to the podium and told stories, recited poems, cried and  offered testimonials. They spoke from the most profound places of the human heart. It was a tribute of love, memory, sadness and the deepest bonds of friendship.

In our mission we talk about helping young people become good human beings. The night of September 17th these students embodied this.They spoke with eloquence, empathy, honesty and heart. They exhibited  a maturity, an earnestness and sense of humanity beyond their years. There was something very sacred about that evening and what they collectively did. Not only did they honor Margot's life, but our school as well, as a community bound in sorrow and in joy. Because of this, I believe that Margo is smiling with the same divine light that the harvest moon gave off that night.

A pink colored bench with daisies sits outside the entrance to the HS building. This was their gift to Margo. 
Life when we allow it, teaches us the most important lessons. This was their gift to all of us. For one important evening, the 10th grade class were teachers of the most profound kind.

Homenaje a la amistad

Me gustaría aprovechar mi primera carta del curso para hablar de los alumnos de grado 10.
 
El día 17 de septiembre por la noche, jornada de Puertas Abiertas para los padres, el colegio rindió homenaje a la vida de Margo Jennings. Durante las dos semanas anteriores, los alumnos de 10º se reunían con la consejera Monna McDiarmid para abrirse a la pena, al duelo, al recuerdo y a la risa. En ese tiempo también aprovechaban para organizar el homenaje. Para todos los presentes, esa noche resultó ser un momento distinguido en nuestra experiencia colectiva en BFIS. Fue sencillo y profundo. Durante dos horas se mostraron videos que los alumnos habían grabado junto con otros preparados por los padres de Margo. Los alumnos subieron al podium y contaron historias, recitaron poemas, lloraron y recordaron experiencias. Hablaron con todo su sentimiento y desde lo más profundo del corazón. Fue un tributo al amor, al recuerdo, a la tristeza y a los lazos más hondos de la amistad.
 
En nuestro Manifiesto hablamos de ayudar a gente joven a ser buenas personas. En la noche del 17 de septiembre estos alumnos representaban precisamente eso. Hablaron con elocuencia, simpatía, honestidad y corazón. Mostraron madurez y seriedad, y una humanidad por encima de su edad. Hubo algo mágico en esa noche y en lo que consiguieron. No sólo honraron a Margo, sino también a todo el colegio, una comunidad unida en la tristeza y la alegría. Por todo esto, creo que Margo está sonriendo con la misma luz divina que la de la luna que nos iluminaba aquella noche.
 
En la entrada al edificio de High School hay un banco rosa con margaritas. Fue su regalo para Margo. 
Cuando lo permitimos, la vida nos enseña lecciones importantes. Fue su regalo para todos nosotros. Durante una noche importante, los alumnos de 10º se convirtieron en unos profesores verdaderamente trascendentales.
